The Hope College Great Performance Series will feature the legendary early vocal music ensemble from the United Kingdom, The Tallis Scholars, on Thursday, April 24, at 7:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall of the Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts.

The New York Times has called them “the rock stars of Renaissance vocal music.” The ensemble has also earned praise from the BBC as “perhaps the greatest early vocal music ensemble in existence.”

The Tallis Scholars are celebrated for their precision and dedication to performing sacred Renaissance music. Under the direction of founder and conductor Peter Phillips, the ensemble has brought the music of the Renaissance to major venues across the globe, including the Royal Albert Hall, the Sistine Chapel and Carnegie Hall.

Since its formation in 1973, the group has recorded more than 60 albums on its label, Gimell Records, and was inducted into the Gramophone Hall of Fame in 2013. In 2023, Gramophone Magazine commemorated the ensemble’s 50th anniversary with a special edition, highlighting its role in advancing Renaissance sacred music to a wider audience.

In addition to their focus on Renaissance music, The Tallis Scholars also perform contemporary works by composers such as Arvo Pärt, John Tavener, Eric Whitacre and Nico Muhly. Their performances continue to resonate with audiences worldwide, and they are known for their clarity and tone.
